Applied Linguistics

Research in Applied Linguistics and Language AcquisitionResearch in Applied Linguistics and Cross-cultural Communication seeks to explore the relations between theory and practice in language with particular reference to issues of language use. It embraces contexts in which people use and learn languages and is a platform for systematically addressing problems involving the use of language and communication in real world situations.

Our research at Newcastle draws on a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, education, technology, sociology, psychology and intercultural studies. Current research is organised across the following themes:

Language learning and teaching - particularly in advancing theoretically-grounded practical outcomes for TESOL and other second-language teachers and learners, in and out of the classroom

Language teaching and technology - including the potential for teaching and learning in cutting-edge digital resources, such as Newcastle’s I-Lab Learn (part of Newcastle’s Digital Institute); also how corpora and multimodal analysis (e.g. through gesture) provide a greater understanding of language learning and use

Social and professional interaction - with a special focus on micro-analysis of spoken interaction in a range of professional contexts, including health, business and education

Cross-cultural communication - particularly in establishing dynamic socio-cultural notions of language and identity in a variety of language contact contexts (e.g. higher education, business, minority language adaptation and change); also considering the dynamic nature of the multilingual mind in the context of linguistic and cultural diversity.

We also have strong links with research under the Language Acquisition and Bilingualism Theme , as well as with collaborations beyond linguistics including in Education, Culture Lab, Business School.
