Our work in theoretical and descriptive linguistics centres on linguistic analysis and its implications for the development of theory, particularly within a generative framework.

Inside this broad remit, we focus on the following research areas:

Language variation and change

This research area includes:

  • historical/diachronic linguistics

  • comparative sociolinguistics
  • dialect syntax
  • linguistic typology

Language acquisition

Language acquistion covers first language acquisition and development and second language acquisition.

Languages 

We specialise in the following languages and language families: Arabic, Bengali, Celtic, Finnic, Germanic, including English, Icelandic, and Scandinavian languages, and Romance.
