Employability

Students participating in a group assignment

Newcastle University aims to use its academic excellence to develop graduates who can apply their knowledge and skills in a global context.

Employability is built into students’ academic experience at Newcastle University at both module and programme level through the Graduate Skills Framework. This framework sets out the interrelated skills and competencies that our students develop during their time at university, through their degrees and extracurricular activities.

For academic staff the framework is designed to help you identify the skills that students will both need to draw on, and will further develop through, the academic courses that you teach. All undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and modules are mapped to the framework using the documents below.

These skills are in turn built into the modules by academic staff through the teaching activities and the forms of assessment chosen which develop the skills identified.

Employability can also be embedded in degrees through the inclusion of placements and work-based learning.

How LTDS can help:

If you want to discuss how the graduate skills framework and development of students’ skills can be embedded into your teaching please contact  ltds@ncl.ac.uk. We can advise on module and programme design and on specific elements such as assessment choices.

  • the ncl+ opportunities which are available to all current students to help them stand out from the competition.
  • the Newcastle University Students' Union which has a wide range of student societies and opportunities through which your students can develop their skills.
