Project:

The role of skeletal muscle function and energetics in the symptoms and metabolic characteristics of Growth Hormone deficiency: a functional NMR approach

From March 2011 to February 2011
Project Leader(s): Dr Tim Cheetman and Akash Sinha
Sponsors: Pfizer

Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is associated with a clinical picture that includes fatigue and loss of muscle bulk. We will be studying young adults to see whether these changes are related to GH-dependent changes in muscle functional energetics. Patients with GH deficiency who are on and off GH therapy will be studied in addition to control subjects. The metabolic profile as determined by NMR spectroscopy during a standard period of lower limb exercise will be compared in the 3 groups and related to quality of life scores.  These studies will help to define the impact of GH on muscle function.
