The Dove Marine Laboratory benefits from a variety of facilities:
Main aquarium
This open-plan aquarium with flow through seawater system, takes from Cullercoats Bay between the low water and high water mark where it is filtered through sand. just outside the Laboratory.
The seawater is pumped into the building by an underground pipe entering the Lab on the west side and kept in holding tanks and drawn off continuously. The main aquarium also has large wet benches with supplies of running sea water and air, allowing variable short term experimental designs for small tanks to be set up.
Fixed tanks include aquaria suitable for deep-sea species as well as shallow tanks for the maintenance and husbandry of coastal and shore species.
