It is the base for field research studies and some teaching takes place at the laboratory. Students are able to experience the wealth of habitats within easy reach of Cullercoats and to understand the coastal issues which are not only biological and physical but must include the effects of human activities. The lab is also the centre of focus for outreach activities conducted by the School.

This laboratory celebrated its centenary on the 29 September 2008.

The laboratory is located 20 minutes from the main University campus in Newcastle, map, which benefits from excellent travel links.
