Staying in North Tyneside

If you are visiting the Dove Marine Laboratory for a course or workshop, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth are both very close to Cullercoats, either a walk (20 minutes) or a short Metro journey away.

Our most highly recommended hotel in terms of value for money, convenience and friendliness of staff is York House Hotel and Studios. All rooms are ensuite and equipped with a ‘mini-kitchen’ (microwave, fridge, coffee/tea-making facilities). York House offer a great breakfast, and also do evening meals. The following hotels offer good value for money:

Some hotels in the Whitley Bay area, have their own nightclubs/bars, and so may be busy late into the evening. South Parade and the Promenade generally can be busy especially on bank holidays, so may not be appropriate for those who need an early start. We do advise checking with Dove staff regarding the reputation of any hotel not listed above.

Nearby Tynemouth is generally a quieter place than Whitley Bay, and has slightly more expensive accommodation.

North Tyneside Council has a policy of only promoting inspected accommodation, i.e. properties that are inspected either by Visit Britain and/or the AA. There is a local guide for visitors to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth on the North Tyneside Council website www.northtyneside.gov.uk

Staying in Newcastle City

The city centre is about 9 miles (14km) from the Dove Marine Laboratory, with very good road and public transport link Metro. We advise people attending the Delve Deeper course to stay out at the coast for convenience.

As you would expect from a popular city such as Newcastle, there is a wide range of hotels to suit every budget and taste.
