The School for Marine Science and Technology will host their annual careers fair on Friday 8th November 2013. The event in previous years has deemed very successful for all including school pupils, teachers, company attendees, undergraduate students and staff.
The event in 2012 was attended by 600 school pupils aged 15-18yrs , 300 undergraduates and 42 companies. The event show cased a wide range of high profile companies and employers who shared the details of their challenging and exciting careers.
Additional to the standard careers fair school pupils participated in a range of stimulating, interactive activities which were designed to help pupils apply their own knowledge and skills into a range of disciplines, which we hope helped to bring science learning to life.
In the afternoon pupils had the choice of attending an engaging debate, a mini conference or cookery demonstration promoting the use of sustainable fish.

Fish is often thought of as being an expensive and unattractive source of protein, this demonstration aimed to dispel some of these myths and encourage families to eat a wider range of seafood. There is also a good deal of confusion about which fish can be eaten without depleting local stocks.
"Really enjoyed the hands on stuff - sea creatures and rescuing a seal simulation. They thought the engineering careers stalls very useful and have collected a lot of information from these." Westfield |
"I was worried they wouldn't enjoy the statistics, but being in the lecture theatre was a novel and exciting experience and the lecturer made the subject current, interesting and 'easy'!" St Thomas Moore |
"The feedback from my students was very positive…they thoroughly enjoyed the event, particularly the careers section and hands on activities." Heworth Grange |
"The boys really found the exhibitions interesting and an eyeopener on careers they had not thought about before. They said the activities were good (Stats and STEM careers), and that the STEM one in particular was most relevant." Newcastle School for Boys |
"Our students thoroughly enjoyed it and I would be keen to attend again in the future." Durham School |
The Inspiring Oceans website offers 15-19 year olds a helping hand in the decision making process for the post-16 years: traineeships, Post-16 courses and University options. It provides informative and thought-provoking materials that help young people to set achievable personal goals, and to open up the range of possibilities available to them. It includes oceans of information, video clips, and appropriate links to support decision making and present pupils with the opportunity to discover some of the less well known but exciting careers available!
The website promotes marine science and the maritime industry amongst Key Stage 4 and post-16 learners as challenging and worthy career fields.
The website launched in 2010 at www.inspiringoceans.co.uk
