Our Oceans of Opportunity Careers Event will be held on 4th November 2011 at Newcastle University. The event is aimed at students from 15-19 years. It promises to be challenging, exciting and hands-on, with lots of information on science related careers. Come along and get stuck in and learn more about the world of work, and about science and technology in the marine environment. The event is free and can be booked through your school. Please contact Annie Cunningham on annie.cunningham@ncl.ac.uk for further information.
The Oceans of Opportunity Event took place at Newcastle University on Wednesday 4th November 2009 and was attended by hundreds of school pupils aged 15-18 from around the country.
At the event, schools participated in a range of stimulating interactive activities that brought science and technology learning to life, including; Sink or Swim - an introduction to ship design, an Environmentally Friendly Oil Slick, and Introductions to Marine Science.
Two winning schools from previous regional events fought it out in the debate: "Is Shipping Sustainable Form of Transport for the 21st Century?" Attending schools participated in the audience, asking challenging and insightful questions. Students also had the opportunity to find out more about the fantastic careers and courses on offer in marine, maritime, science and engineering fields. A wide range of high profile companies and employers attended the event with many challenging and exciting careers showcased. The event gained support from a number of organizations including NYK Shipping, Port of Tyne, Maersk, the MFA and MMO and International Paints to name but a few.
During 2008 and 2009, the Inspiring Oceans team has been travelling the country, bringing marine themed activities, discussions and debates to Key Stage 4 and post-16 students in York, Chester, London and Bristol. The students have been getting stuck into topical issues including 'Ocean Acidification' and 'Climate Change and the Oceans', and learning about careers in the marine and maritime field, with talks from the British Antarctic Survey, The Wildlife Trust, Natural England, Harbour Masters, the MOD, Newcastle and Southampton universities and many more.
The Inspiring Oceans website offers 15-19 year olds a helping hand in the decision making process for the post-16 years: traineeships, Post-16 courses and University options. It provides informative and thought-provoking materials that help young people to set achievable personal goals, and to open up the range of possibilities available to them. It includes oceans of information, video clips, and appropriate links to support decision making and present pupils with the opportunity to discover some of the less well known but exciting careers available!
The website promotes marine science and the maritime industry amongst Key Stage 4 and post-16 learners as challenging and worthy career fields.
The website launched in 2010 at www.inspiringoceans.co.uk
