
As part of the National Science and Engineering Week in 2013, the School of Marine Science and Technology is offering an oceanful of fascinating talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities to get people of all ages involved.

Thank you as my children are still talking about the blue velvet crab and the peppery seaweed. All of the staff, students and volunteers were amazingly helpful so thanks to them for taking time out of their weekend for this. Next time we’re splodging in rock pools at the beach and my children ask “what’s this” I feel a bit more confident that I’ll know the answer!! Deborah Grieves |

Seals, Whales and Dolphins: Ecology, classification and threats.
Location: King’s Hall, Armstrong Building
Age Group: Key stage 4 and 5, Time: Session 1: 9.30am to 12.00 noon (Key stage 4) Session two: 12.30pm to 3.00pm (Key stage 5)
Interactive session which brings to life current research at Newcastle University into these fascinating animals.
Pupils will learn which species are found in the north east of England.
They will also discover how we survey populations and discuss the conservation status as a result of human impacts on their environment.

Seal, Whales and Dolphins.
Location: King’s Hall, Armstrong Building
Age Group: Key stage 1 and 2 Time: 9.30am to 12.30pm
Fun session where pupils will learn how to classify seals, whales and dolphins within the animal kingdom.
Pupils will learn how to identify these animals both visually and acoustically. This session will end with pupils making their own whale tails and pledges to marine environment.

What lies beneath the sea? How is the sea floor formed? Is the earth’s crust all the same?
What techniques do scientists use to map the sea bed? All these questions will be answered through hands on sessions.

Magmas, Mantles and Media.
Location: Dove Marine Laboratory
Age Group: Family Event. Time: 6.30pm to 7.30pm
Susan Gebbels, part of the Dove’s Outreach Team set off on an adventure to the Pacific Ocean. Susan worked as an Education Officer onboard the JOIDES Resolution, a research ship interested in drilling into the earth’s core.
Susan invites you to an evening where she shares her stories from the ship.

Deep Sea – Deeper than light.
Location: Dove Marine Laboratory
Age Group: Key stage 3 Time: 9.30am to 12.30pm
In this session pupils will learn about the weird and wonderful animals that live in the deepest parts of the oceans.
We invite pupils to learn about the incredible adaptations these animals have in order to survive in such an extreme environment.

Public Lecture: Marine mammals off the Northumberland coast- Ecology & threats.
Location: Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building.
Age Group: Over 12 Years Time: 5.30pm to 6.30pm
In this lecture the ecology, threats and status of local marine mammal species will be discussed.
Dr. Per Berggern will talk about these animals in relation to local fisheries and renewable energy developments within the range of habitats the Northumberland coastal waters offers. The area attracts a range of marine mammals with a year around presence of minke whales, whitebeaked dolphins, harbour porpoise, grey and harbour seals.

Marine Pollution – Coastal guardians.
Location: Dove Marine laboratory
Age Group: Key stage 2. Time: 10.30am to 2.30pm
Fun and interactive session where we aim to improve pupils’ awareness of the consequences of marine pollution.
The session will inspire children to make a difference by changing their own behaviour,to reduce their use of plastics and to recycle more. This hands on event and experience a variety of fun experiments.
