Splashdown Summer School

Summer Schools for Key Stages 2 and Key Stages 3

The marine environment is the most extensive ecosystem on our planet.

We rely on it for food, for transport, and for tourism and leisure.  Download the Splashdown Poster hereWe look to it increasingly as a source of renewable energy and for compounds that can be used in medicine and biotechnology.

The Dove Marine laboratory is running 2 week long summer schools for 9 to 14 years old.  Our long running Key stage 2 summer school,  is a great introduction to the marine environment.  In this week-long summer school pupils will investigate the animals and plants that inhabit our oceans. They will be able to explore marine life at first-hand on local rocky shores, in the University's aquarium and by using microscopes. Pupils will also consider the importance of our seas to humans and how the design of ships can have implications for the costs of goods that we import. Each Pupil will have the opportunity to carry out their own mini-research project. Join in the fun this summer. Games, new friends and art activities included.

Our additional summer school is aimed at Key Stage 3 pupils; we are running this course in conjunction with Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Newcastle University’s Marine Station.   We welcome back any student that has previously attended our Key Stage 2 courses,  however it is not necessary for the students to have any previous knowledge attend this course.
