The Integrated PhD in Engineering and Science in the Marine Environment is designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a broad spectrum of experience during your period of study, and to be introduced to topics that may not have been directly addressed in your technical education, but are complementary to it. The intention of the Integrated PhD is to enable you to progress your own or sponsor’s interest in a specific area of study, whilst simultaneously gaining knowledge and experience in a range of areas (both technical and general) that will be of value in the development of your future career.

The first of these aims is primarily achieved through an original piece of research, while the second is achieved by following a structured programme of taught courses, selected by you according to your professional requirements. Approximately 40% of the Integrated PhD programme comprises taught courses delivered in modular form. You study modules in research skills and technical subjects related to the area of your research. You also select modules of wider relevance to your intended career, such as academic teaching and practice, management, and international affairs.
