Your Course

The course is really good, I am really enjoying it. It is very practical and technical and quite vocational in terms of what we learn could easily be applied in the work place. We are going to carry out a consultancy project in the summer which I am looking forward to. The teaching is really good. The professors are experienced and knowledgeable in their area. Despite their busy schedules, they still find time to help and always respond to emails. The administrative staff in the office are also helpful. We are taught in block weeks meaning we have 40 weeks in University one week and then a free week the next. I enjoy this style of teaching.

Choosing Newcastle

I chose to come to the UK to study as there was only one university in the whole of Canada which offered the programme I wanted to do. The UK had more options. I heard about Newcastle through word of mouth. When I did more research on the programme, I fell in love with it and found out good things about the city and the University. I am glad I made the choice. My boyfriend also studies a Masters here and is a huge Newcastle fan so that also influenced my decision.

University Facilities

I use the Ridley Building to do most of my research and computer work. It's not too busy and there are plenty of computers and it is nice and quiet. I also use the Students' Union. The MENS Bar is quite nice and I use it to socialise with my friends after an intense week of lectures.

Accommodation

I live in Spital Tongues in a private apartment with my boyfriend. It is a great location and is a ten minute walk to University. I like the fact that it is a quiet area and is close to the city centre, plus there is a useful shop around the corner to stock up on groceries.

Living in Newcastle

Newcastle is a great city. I didn't really know what to expect before coming here but it is cool. I like the vibe and it is a very friendly place. It is definitely geared towards students. I like the passion that the local people show towards their football team. It is similar to the passion the local people show back home for the hockey team. I also like the fact that you can walk everywhere.

Spare Time

In my spare time I enjoy going to the cinema, enjoying drinks on the Quayside and going to football matches - I have been to about four or five games this season.

Advice for International Students

I would recommend international students to definitely look in to Newcastle. It is in a great area of the UK which is often overlooked and the city and University has a lot to offer its students. You can live here on a low budget with a friendly atmosphere. It is definitely worth looking into.
