Anne Cunningham
Marine Education Officer

I completed an honours degree in Applied Marine Biology at Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.  After my degree I worked in various locations around the world for 6 years as PADI Diving Instructor and a Commercial diver.  In 2008 I went to Liverpool’s John Moore University to retrained as a Secondary Science teacher.  I Joined the staff at the Dove Marine Laboratory in September 2009 as their Marine Education Officer.  In this role I teach various aspects of Marine Biology and Marine Engineering to School pupils ages from 5yrs to 18 yrs old. 
In my own time I am currently working on my profession development by under taking a part time online masters course  in Coastal Zone Management with the University of Ulster, with the hope of expanding my career into marine management.  

 

Roles and Responsibilities

As mention above my main responsible is to liase with schools and I teach various aspects of Marine Science and Technology.
 Within the outreach team I am involved with the following
  • Oceans of Opportunity Careers Fair - annual
  • Calling all Budding Marine Biologists  - Competition
  • Sea Change NE - 2011 project
  •  National Science and Engineering Week - annual
  • Summer Schools - annual
  • Work Expereince for over 16-18 yr olds.

Qualifications

  • BSc Honours Degree in Applied Marine Biology (2.i)
  •  PGCE in Secondary Science 
  • Currently working on my masters research project, " Managing change in the Berwickshore and North Northumberland Coast European Marien Site using an Ecosystem Based Model."

Informal Interests

I love diving and travelling.  I sit on the the North East Branch British Science Association commitee where we arrange STEM events within the North East.
