Introduction

Dr Cheng Siong Chin (Lecturer in Marine Control Systems) was a Senior Research and Development Engineer at Seagate Technology International and worked on the servo-mechanical development of hard disc drives, actuators and flexible circuit cable design.  He currently holds 3 U.S. Patents and 2 Trade Secrets. He was also involved in a research funded project with British Gas Asia Pacific Ltd and Robotics Research Centre (RRC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on the design and development of a semi-autonomous marine vehicle for the oil and gas industry. Besides, he had completed his Master of Science dissertation work entitled "Analysis, Model-Order Reduction and Control of a ALSTOM's Gasifier" under his supervisors, Professor Neil Munro and Emeritus Professor Howard Rosenbrock. Before moving to Newcastle University, he was a Lecturer in Mechatronics Engineering at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore.  His research works since joining MAST have included projects under the control of renewable energy systems such as a standalone single-axis solar tracker and dynamic positioning of marine vessels. He is a Chartered Engineer, European Engineer, member of IET and Senior Member of IEEE. He is a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of The Mediterranean Journal of Measurement and Control, Journal of Marine Science: Research & Development and Journal of Shipping and Ocean Engineering. His interests are mainly in marine robotic vehicles (e.g. AUV/ROV/ASV) , computer-aided design for modelling, numerical computation, simulation and applied control systems design using real-time PIC/AVR microcontroller, xPC Target™and MATLAB™.
