Dr. Clarke joined the previous Department with many years of industrial experience at the former BSRA, where he was responsible for initiating and managing research activities over a wide range of hydrodynamics, structures and other naval architectural topics.
He has also carried out research into ship manoeuvring and control over many years and was concerned in a four-year managed programme concerned with the effect of trailing vortices on the calculation of ship stability derivatives. Recently he has just completed his involvement in a three-year EU funded project concerned with the steering of ships with podded propulsion.
His other interests include the hydrodynamics and stability of high speed planing craft, as well as the use of virtual reality displays within simulators for ship manoeuvring and port approach training.
Dr. Clarke has also taken a leading role in chairing several technical committees at IMO and ITTC. He is currently the Secretary to the Executive Committee of ITTC, which is concerned with the organisation of the 24th ITTC Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland in September 2005.
