John Mangan joined from the University of Hull in September 2008 where he held the Peter Thompson Chair in Logistics. Prior to this he held academic posts at University College Dublin and at The Irish Management Institute / Trinity College Dublin. A native of Ireland, John held a number of roles prior to embarking upon an academic career: he worked as a freight clerk with Aer Lingus, as an analyst with the Irish airports authority, as a graduate trainee in the Irish Civil Service (in both the Marine and Treasury departments), and as company secretary of a seaweed harvesting company.
Primarily in marine transport (port governance and management, port-centric logistics, and port route choice) and global logistics (international trade, international transport, and global logistics and supply chain strategies).
I also have a keen research interest in management and skills development in logistics and transport, and in research philosophy and methodological triangulation.
I am co-editor of the International Journal of Logistics: Research and Applications (www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13675567.asp)and Principal Investigator on the EPSRC funded project 'Low Carbon Shipping' (www.lowcarbonshipping.co.uk)

Paper on research methodology in logistics (Mangan et al (2004) in the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management 34 (565-578)) is now one of the most downloaded papers in that journal.
Chaired, at the request of Ireland’s Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, the Task Force on Transport Logistics in Relation to Ports (final report launched by the Minister in April 2002).
Ph.D. thesis ranked fifth worldwide in the biannual competition hosted by the International Journal of Maritime Economics (2002).
Winner of both the 1999 European Foundation for Management Development (efmd) European Case Writing Competition (Public Sector Management Category) and the European Case Clearing House (ECCH) Irish Case Writing Competition (Public Sector Management Category).
