School of Marine Science and Technology | Research Programmes

Research Programmes

We offer challenging, fulfilling and industrially relevant research orientated degrees. We have world class research facilities, and our marine and maritime research has an international reputation.

Our research degrees include:

  • MRes (Technology in the Marine Environment)
  • MPhil
  • PhD
  • Taught PhD (Integrated PhD in Engineering and Science in the Marine Environment)

Research in Marine Sciences

Our MPhil and PhD programmes provide training in the techniques that enable scientists to play leading roles in understanding and managing coastal environments throughout the world. Each year research students contribute to the Postgraduate Conference, participate in the seminar series and have opportunities for special training to equip them for independent careers as marine scientists or coastal managers.

Research in Marine Technology

Our marine technology research leads into design, offshore engineering, marine engineering, computational fluid dynamics, high-performance computing, hydrodynamics and decision support work. This is complemented by extensive world-class research and teaching facilities. Support for our research comes from research councils and industry. We have close links with the Engineering Design Centre and can offer opportunities for research projects linked to local and national marine industries.
