Covering over 70% of the Earth's surface, the global ocean has been described as the 'last true frontier'. One of the harshest environments in the world, the sea presents challenging problems for living organisms, vessels sailing on or under it, and for fixed structures.

Both biologists and engineers are interested to learn more about the seas, and to use this international resource in a responsible and environmentally sustainable way.

The School is regarded as a major European university centre for these subjects with an active research environment and excellent facilities. Our degrees have a long and distinguished history, having been taught here for more than a century.
