Marine Biology, BSc Honours

UCAS Code: C161
Duration: 3 Years

Well known for teaching marine biology for over 100 years, the Dove Marine Laboratory celebrated its centenary in 1997. Students make full use of these excellent facilities, both in the laboratory and the sea-going Research Vessel RV, The Princess Royal.

Stage 1 provides an introduction to the physical nature of the oceans, waves, tides and currents and the biology of marine animal and plant organisms. At Stage 2, modules provide more detailed coverage of marine ecology, experimental marine biology and oceanography and are accompanied by modules that enhance practical skills and data handling. This knowledge and understanding of Marine Biology highlights three specialist areas which are then studied at an advanced level in Stage 3:

  • The Biology of Marine Organisms
  • The Ecology of Marine Communities
  • The Physical and Chemical Processes occurring in the Marine Environment.

An extensive range of compulsory and optional modules are selected by students after discussion with their Advisors of Studies.

Marine Biology graduates leave Newcastle aware of the importance of life in the seas and oceans and appreciate the interaction between people and the marine environment. They have developed practical and field skills, which are invaluable to a wide range of potential employers.
