Foundation Year

This is a one-year introductory course to all the Engineering degree courses at Newcastle University, designed for those who have shown that they have the ability but lack the necessary qualifications to enter Stage 1 directly.

Overseas applicants may be well-prepared in maths and physics, but if you feel you need tuition in English, you may study either 20 credits or 40 credits of English alongside your engineering subjects You may have taken A levels, but lack one of Maths or Physics (or have poor grades), or you have come through another system, such as BTEC, GNVQ, Scottish Highers or an overseas system, and need 'topping up' in both subjects.

It's possible to take Foundation Year with neither Maths nor Physics beyond GCSE level, but it requires a lot of determination and hard work even for those who have the ability in these subjects. You may also be considering AS levels in Maths or Physics. These would provide a good basis for 'topping up' in our Foundation Year. It's possible that with good grades you may be offered direct entry to Stage 1.

Entry to Foundation Year is made by applying to a specific BEng or MEng course with Foundation Year.
