Along the shores of any landmass with a significant tidal range, for example the UK, macroalgae is seen to grow in profusion. This project is an investigation of the energy potential of this crop which can be grown and harvested without using valuable agricultural land. The work involves sampling 9 species of macroalgae from the northeast coast of England over 24 months and assessing their carbohydrate, oil and protein content before feeding them to an anaerobic digestor to assess their potential for the generation of biogas.
