The journal Physical Review A has featured a striking image from a Newcastle paper on its Kaleidoscope web page. The paper is by 2010 MMath Student John Helm and co-supervisors Carlo Barenghi and Anthony Youd. The image resembles a cartoon sun but actually shows reconnections on a helically-perturbed vortex ring in a Bose-Einstein condensate.
