Early Clinical Experience (ECE)

Clinical learning and teaching

Clinical learning & teaching

Newcastle MBBS was a pioneer of Early Clinical Experience (ECE) in the 1970s and has a good reputation as an integrated course, with clinical contact throughout the first two years of the course in the form of full and half-day GP and Hospital visits and Family/Patient studies.

We believe ECE helps you to develop a professional identity, increase your motivation to learn, apply basic science and retain knowledge better, consider your career options earlier, understand patient perspectives and identify role models.

During Year 1 and 2 you will undertake five visits to hospitals based around the Region some of which will be for a full day, while the Clinical Experience Bank offers the opportunity for 2nd year students to observe clinical ward rounds, outpatient clinics and theatre lists.

In addition, students undertake a Family study in 1st year and a Chronic Patient study in Stage 2 which requires them to work in pairs and carry out a series of visits to patients' homes.

GP tutors play a key role in delivering Medicine in Community teaching during Year 1 and 2 and students visit General Practices in the course of their first two years. We believe interaction between students and clinical practitioners is crucial in placing greater emphasis on developing attitudes and professionalism and providing you with opportunities to see what it is you are aiming for.
