Base Units (Clinical Learning Centres)

Base Units or Clinical Learning Centres are the terms used by the Medical School to describe a group of hospitals and general practices within the Region where medical students undertake the majority of their clinical training. Students are allocated to a Base Unit based upon their stated preference for 3rd and Final Year. However, as we believe it is important students are exposed to as many teaching and learning experiences as possible, you are allocated to a different Base Unit for Final Year to that experienced in 3rd year.

There are four Base Units associated with the Newcastle curriculum and each one draws upon its own particular strengths to deliver high quality undergraduate and postgraduate training:

Each Base Unit is led by a Clinical Sub-Dean who is a senior clinician committed to the aims and objectives of the programme. Each Clinical Sub-Dean co-ordinates the Base Unit leads who are responsible for the delivery of individual clinical attachments e.g. Child Health within their Base Unit.

The first point of contact for student support is the Base Unit Office, but all students will still have access to student support provided by the University, Medical School and their personal tutor.
