Clinical Skills and Anatomy Lab

Clinical Skills LabThe development of early clinical skills is a philosophy which has been held by Newcastle Medical School for many years. This belief, resulted in the Medical School being one of the first to develop a Clinical Skills Laboratory which allows students to learn and perfect clinical skill procedures such as Basic Life Support, CPR, venepuncture, pulses and BP measurement, as well as clinical examination of the eye, ear, breasts, joints, abdomen and chest prior to moving onto the wards full-time in Phase II.

Students are able to practise on manikins, their peers and patient volunteers in a safe environment where mistakes can be made, and are supervised and taught by senior clinical staff and Foundation Programme doctors. Student evaluation of their experience of Clinical Skills teaching in Newcastle is consistently high.

Additionally, in the first two years, Newcastle medical students undertake the study of anatomy using cadavers which takes place under the close supervision of the anatomy demonstrators. This practical experience uses prosections, models, ultrasound, radiological imaging and body painting approaches to enhance and improve knowledge and understanding of clinically applied anatomy.

Students have the opportunity to dissect the body as a Year 4 Student Selected Component.
