New approaches to historic landscapes

15-16 February 2016, Istanbul

This workshop was held as part of the project “New Approaches to Historic Landscapes: Boğsak in Isauria,” supported by a British Academy Newton Fund Advanced Fellowship, and led by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (Turkey) and Newcastle University (UK). It is based on Bogsak Archaeological Survey, which is a settlement and landscape archaeology project being carried out in southern Turkey since 2010. This workshop used this archaeological project as a case study to explore new methods for analyzing and managing historic landscapes.

The workshop brought together a wide range of academic researchers working on diverse aspects of historic landscapes from multiple disciplinary viewpoints. Archaeologists, historians, heritage managers, landscape planners and ecologists, historical geographers, and conservation architects will present their recent research on historic landscapes, as well as projects for their management and preservation.

The workshop aimed to introduce new methods for the study of historic landscapes and promote good practices for the management of landscapes as cultural heritage, and included a training session for early career researchers.

We hope it will provide the basis for future collaboration between a wide range of disciplines dealing with landscapes. In so doing, it seeks to bridge the gap between in-depth research and less granular, extensive studies, cutting edge technology and vernacular traditions, the specialist and the public.
