photograph Dr Appleby joins Secretary of State for visit to OGN yard

Head of School Dr John Appleby joined a party including the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Ed Davey MP, visiting the OGN yard at Wallsend on 24th May.

OGN build oil and gas production platforms (the tower for a major platform for the North Sea - the Apache project - is shown), and are planning a mass-production line for 'jackets' (three-legged towers) providing the base for deep-water wind-turbines for offshore wind farms. This £50M investment will provide over 600 jobs on Tyneside once completed. The production line will produce three 'jackets' per week and will use 100,000 tonnes of steel per year - a scale of production not seen before except in wartime.
