Postgraduate Conference procedures

If you are in years 1 or 2 you will be giving a presentation. We will have a buffet lunch at which year 3 will be presenting posters of their work.

The final timetable will be sent out prior to the conference. Please ensure you follow the directions below and submit the required documents by the due date.

Year 1

  • Two documents are required:
    • a 100-200 word abstract (word format)
    • a 3 page introduction to your research topic and outline of the project (this must be pdf and follow the guidelines (PDF: 46KB))
  • These two documents, which are likely to be very similar to the research proposal you have already prepared, are to be submitted to your supervisory team for checking and feedback; once completed FINAL VERSIONS need to be emailed to Ann Pattison (ann.pattison@ncl.ac.uk) by no later than 6th March 2012.  (Supervisors please note that all submitted work will be publicly displayed so omit any aspects of the work with IP issues).
  • You need to prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation (we will be very strict on timing during the conference). This is to be checked with the supervisory team and then emailed to Ann Pattison by no later than 13th March 2012.

Year 2

  • Two documents are required:
    • a 100-200 word abstract (word format)
    • a 6-8 page paper of your research to date (this must be pdf and follow the guidelines (PDF: 46KB))
  • These two documents are to be submitted to your supervisory team for checking and feedback; once completed they are to be emailed to Ann Pattison (ann.pattison@ncl.ac.uk) by no later than 6th March 2012.  (Supervisors please note that all submitted work will be publicly displayed so omit any aspects of the work with IP issues).
  • You need to prepare a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation (we will be very strict on timing during the conference). This is to be checked with the supervisory team and then emailed to Ann Pattison by no later than 13th March 2012.

Year 3

  • An A0 poster (in PowerPoint format) is to be prepared and checked with your supervisory team. Once complete, this is to be emailed to Ann Pattison (ann.pattison@ncl.ac.uk) by 6th March 2012 for printing and School website upload. Material should not contravene any copyright issues (for example, do not use downloaded images unless you have permission). Note that the University is pushing towards e-theses and as such, copyright of downloaded/scanned images becomes an issue, hence it is good to get into the practice of not using them. (Supervisors please note that all submitted work will be publicly displayed so omit any aspects of the work with IP issues).
  • You will be expected to stand by your poster and address any queries during the conference lunch.

It is important that you meet the deadlines. Please do not be late. If you have any genuine concerns about submitting your work by the deadline, or you have any queries, please contact Ann Pattison as soon as possible.

The conference has the status of a closed internal meeting within MSE. Nevertheless PGs and supervisors should be aware of IP issues and should observe the same caution as they would when presenting material at an outside conference. The Conference organisers will not be responsible for IP issues or for the content of papers.
