This note applies to the undergraduate individual Third Year Project modules for MEng (Hons) and BEng (Hons) Stage 3 students:
These projects are organised and assessed according to a unified scheme, but the actual work expected varies depending on the type of project. These projects are at Level H, ie students will be expected to apply routinely the lower Level (ie C and I) knowledge, skills and understanding taught previously at Stages 1-2 (or the equivalent) as well as demonstrating an ability to acquire and apply these at the higher (H) Level. All students will be expected to take ownership of their Project and display a high level self direction independent of the academic supervisor. In planning, executing and reporting their Projects students must take account of the specific Learning Outcome requirements of UKSpec/QAA Benchmark Statement as set out in the Appendix below.
The amount of effort expected depends on the Credit weighting (1 Credit ≡ 10 hours) and students are expected to achieve the required outcomes within this time frame. No extra marks are given for effort beyond this level, but falling short of it will lead to reduced marks.
The marks awarded for each component of the final mark will be based on SAgE Faculty undergraduate marking guidelines (see Student Handbook) which for Projects can be summarised as follows:
| 70 - 100% |
Clear evidence of excellence in planning, execution and presentation of the work. |
| 60 - 69% |
A very high standard of work with evidence of analytical ability used to good effect. |
| 50 - 59% |
Fair work, but somewhat lacking in quality and/or useful quantity. |
| 40 - 49% |
Work of modest quality, but with sufficient merit to show potential as a professional engineer. |
| 0 - 39% |
Poor work indicating the perpetrator is unlikely to be capable of performing as a professional engineer. |
