Reporting to the Head of School this post supports at a strategic level the development, promotion, implementation and monitoring of the academic and commercial aims and activities of the School. Within the School this post coordinates the development and implementation of communication and information technology projects with a wide range of internal and external clients.

Research Interests

The majority of the research with which I am involved could best be classed as 'translational research', applying educational theory and the appropriate use of communications and information technology to the support of campus and distance based learners. Working in this field for approximately ten years, I have developed expertise in the following areas:

  • project management
  • learning needs analysis
  • the organisational context of training
  • cognitive psychology and theories of learning
  • instructional design
  • courseware engineering
  • authoring systems and languages
  • supporting student learning with interactive media
  • the use of artificial intelligence in educational design
  • multimedia and learning;
  • open, distance and student-centred learning
  • methods of evaluation

Other Expertise

My background lies in software engineering and, prior to joining the Faculty of Medicine Computing Centre, I designed neural data capture, analysis, and graphical display software for use within the research programmes of the Department of Neurobiology. This allowed me to develop skills and expertise in the ares of:

  • real-time software engineering
  • systems analysis and design methodologies
  • database design and management
  • computer control of external electronic apparatus
  • micro-electronics design and manufacture
  • and by necessity some basic neuroscience
