Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Skills Training

The School develops and delivers a range of ICT training courses designed to promote efficient use of IT software in academia. Here at Newcastle University, courses are delivered to Faculty of Medical Sciences undergraduate and postgraduate students and, research staff, and can also be delivered to external clients. All courses are developed and delivered in close liaison with Walton Medical Library staff and course administrators/leaders to ensure that our courses equip students with the skills to manage academic work from research to publication.

Courses are frequently reviewed and updated and include:

  • introduction to IT facilities at the University
  • document management using MS Word
  • data handling, analysis and interpretation using MS Excel
  • presentation skills using MS PowerPoint to create effective presentations
  • library and ICT skills assimilation run jointly between us and the Walton Library, to encourage effective use of online medical databases, EndNote reference manager, and MS Word
  • data management including using MS Access
  • publishing on the web, including basic HTML, accessibility and usability.

Annually more than 300 hours of teaching are delivered to at least 1800 staff and students across the Faculty. Our teaching is fully evaluated and integrated into the various curricula that we support, ensuring that it enhances other teaching and learning.

Our Learning and Teaching Advisor holds a PGC in Academic Practice and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is supported by a team of experienced teaching and demonstrating staff and technical advisors. The School is able to offer:

  • advice on training and support, assessment, and integration of ICT skills into the curriculum
  • tailored ad hoc training and support to meet your requirements.
