The MBBS staff development programme began in 1998, and since then over 5800 healthcare professionals have attended one or more sessions on offer. Sessions are organised in response to the changing needs of the MBBS curriculum.
With the emphasis in Newcastle University's curriculum being on teaching that is less didactic, and involves more active learning, improving communication skills and other areas of personal and professional development, much of the demand for teaching support has been centred around small group work and facilitation of student centred learning.
The teaching sessions are informally run, friendly and participative in nature. Appropriate accreditation is usually available for attendees. The optimum number of participants for each staff development training session is determined beforehand and in most cases the group size is kept fairly small to encourage maximum participation.
Sessions are not just held at the University, to date, over 600 training sessions have been held throughout the region in the clinical ‘Base Units’, with the feedback being overwhelmingly positive. In the majority of cases, participants have felt that their attendance has given them the stimulus to reinforce their own teaching strengths and enabled them to be more reflective about possible areas for improvement or further training.
