Tempus Programme: Simulation for Medical Education and Skills Training

This was an European Commission funded collaborative project led by the School's Anatomy and Clinical Skills (ACS) unit. Working with The European Surgical Institute in Hamburg, the European Institute for Telesurgery in Strasbourg and with other experts from the Faculty of Medicine at Maastricht University, ACS staff introduced innovative surgical and clinical skills teaching methodologies to Cairo University School of Medicine. As medical student numbers at Cairo University have increased it has become increasingly difficult for medical students to have direct contact with patients before their fourth year. Postgraduate trainees and students, especially in the surgical specialties, are also suffering from diminished training and surgical practice. This project aimed to address these problems and develop their clinical competence using innovative teaching methodologies in a safe environment.

Utilising the skills and experience of M-SED school staff the project:

  • restructured the teaching process and training for surgical and clinical skills in Cairo University School of Medicine
  • established learning resources to benefit 7000 medical students and 2900 faculty staff members
  • trained academic staff to manage the new learning resources
  • integrated simulation in medical education to allow Cairo medical students and trainees to practice clinical and surgical skills in a stress free environment.
