Background

Introduction

I am Head of Enterprise Services in the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) and an Assistant Director of the University's Research and Enterprise Services. Since August 2016, I have also been acting as Head of Enterprise Services in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE).

I have overall responsibility for, and lead a team of fifteen staff working on, all aspects of enterprise across FMS, including intellectual property, spin outs, consultancy, Continuing Professional Development, commercial services and other non-traditional funding streams. This includes joint working with our key NHS partners, particularly the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I am involved in external marketing of the Faculty's strengths, particularly to commercial partners.

My role in SAgE, where we have a team of 10 staff working across a broad range of academic disciplines, is similar.

I also oversee the Faculty's nine core scientific facilities, working with the managers of bioimaging, bioinformatics, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, genomics, high-throughput screening, in vivo imaging, proteomics and protein analysis and a Containment Level 3 laboratory - ensuring that they provide excellent services to both internal and external customers. I have responsibility for managing our two bio-incubator facilities based at the Medical School and the Centre for Life and our Business Innovation Facility at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality.

I work closely with the Deans in the two Faculties I currently have responsibility for, particularly the Deans of Research and Innovation, and with the Assistant Director (Business Innovation and Improvement) of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Background

I was originally employed at Newcastle University as manager of the Life Knowledge Park in December 2004. The Knowledge Park was one of six throughout the UK, set up with funding from the Departments of Health and Trade and Industry to lead academic research and to engage the public in discussions on genetic science. It received £10m of government and Regional Development Agency (One NorthEast) funding.

I subsequently co-ordinated and project managed the development of the North-East England Stem Cell Institute (NESCI), a joint initiative with Durham University and the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

I was appointed to a Business Development Manager  role at Faculty level in January 2009, before starting my current role in July 2011.

Before moving back to my native Tyneside in late 2004, I was Director of Marketing and Membership at the British Dental Association in London. I have an MBA (with Distinction) from Newcastle University Business School (August 2004).
