MaD DaysMaD Days
MaD Days (Medicine and Dentistry at Newcastle) invite students from the local region to the Medical School at Newcastle to explore the exciting world of Medicine and Dentistry. The days are an aspiration raising experience aimed at students with the potential to study Medicine or Dentistry at University.
The year 12 Days allow students to explore either Medicine OR Dentistry. Students take part in interactive lectures and a practical session in the Clinical Skills Lab. Students can register their interest by completing the Year 12 MaD Day Booking Form. All students are welcome to apply but should the events be oversubscribed, places will be allocated using certain criteria. Year 12 2017 MaD Day bookings will close on Monday 2 October 2017. The year 12 MaD Day dates are:
- 7th November 2017
- 28th November 2017
- 29th November 2017
The year 9 MaD Days allow students to explore both Medicine and Dentistry. Students participate in an interactive lecture and practical session for both subjects. Teachers must book the places for their pupils. Teachers can register their interest by completing the Year 9 MaD Day Booking Form. Year 9 2017 MaD Day bookings will close on Monday 29 January 2018. The year 9 MaD Day dates are:
- 20th March 2018
- 17th May 2018
- 14th June 2018
Discover MedicineDiscover Medicine
Discover Medicine are a team of current medical students who travel to local schools to deliver workshops with pupils. The Discover Medicine team currently have activities for year 8, 10 and 12 pupils as detailed below:
This is an interactive session aiming to show pupils the basics of medicine and the human body. Pupils will learn about how the heart functions and what happens when it goes wrong.
This session will introduce pupils to some of the equipment used by doctors for diagnosis. Pupils will have the opportunity to try taking blood pressure and listening to chests through stethoscopes.
This session is designed for those particularly interested in applying to study medicine at university. It will cover the application process, the UKCAT, entry requirements and the interview.
All the sessions will be an hour long and are suitable for up to 30 pupils.
Students are available to visit on Wednesday afternoons. Bookings for these sessions are now open.

The Festive Lecture is an opportunity for year 10 students to hear from world-leading academics about a range of exciting areas of Medical Sciences.

Leading EdgeLeading Edge
The Leading Edge scheme introduces Year 8-12 school students to the world of scientific research.
The scheme teams a group of school students with a research-active academic to develop a project and get hands-on experience in the researcher’s laboratory. Projects have ranged from discovering the what, where and how of antibiotics, the effect of light on graphene and how liver fibrosis develops and reverses.
Leading Edge is interdisciplinary, involving Newcastle University academics from:
- Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences
- Institute for Cellular Medicine
- School of Chemistry
- School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
