My research focuses on genetic epidemiology of complex cardiovascular disease. We are carrying out large-scale family and case-control association studies into complex cardiovascular traits in collaboration with a number of international epidemiology groups.
Among our interests is coronary artery disease, where we have investigated the contribution of common polymorphisms in genes of the renin-angiotensin system, lipid metabolic pathway and clotting factor pathway to susceptibility to myocardial infarction, and have originated the approach of 'Mendelian randomisation' to test the causality of hypothesised novel cardiovascular risk factors in coronary disease.
We are investigating the genetics of a variety of quantitative traits related to cardiovascular risk including blood pressure, plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme, plasma clotting factors and plasma C-reactive protein, in family studies. Most recently, we have been awarded a BHF Programme Grant (with Professors Judith Goodship and John Burn) to undertake a national genetic study of Fallot's tetralogy in trio families (The CHANGE study).
