We want to attract future research leaders from around the world and support them to develop successful academic careers at Newcastle University. We offer two main research fellowship schemes for outstanding post-doctoral scientists: Faculty Fellowships for early career scientists and Newcastle University Research Fellowships (NURF) for early to mid-career scientists. Fellows will be based in one of the following Institutes.

Newcastle University Research Fellowships

Develop your independent research career at Newcastle University.

A Newcastle University Research Fellowship (NURF) is for early to mid-career research scientists. A NURF provides up to 5 years funding to develop your independent research activities. You will have access to our excellent scientific facilities and will be provided with your own laboratory space. Regular constructive review and mentoring by senior academics will help you realise your potential and support your transition to an independent research leader.

Eligibility 

  • PhD in the subject area
  • outstanding publication record
  • relevant active post-doctoral experience
  • eligible for external funding

Faculty Fellowships

Flexible awards for early stages post-doctoral researchers who plan to apply for externally funded fellowships.

A Faculty Fellowship is for early career scientists to develop an original research idea and secure external fellowship funding. The fellowship provides 2 years funding, with the possibility of an extension to 3 years based on performance.

Eligibility

  • PhD in the subject area in the last 5 years
  • strong publication record
  • eligible for externally funded fellowship awards
