Forensic Psychology

Forensic Psychology Research Group

Theme Leader

Dr Gavin Oxburgh

Major Research Themes

Our main research themes include:

  • Forensic interviewing (including victims, witnesses and suspects of adults and children);
  • Forensic psychiatry;
  • Assessment and treatment of offenders;
  • Fire-setting and arson;
  • Eyewitness testimony;
  • Vulnerability;
  • Mental Health;
  • Psychology of religion and extremism.

Expertise

A major strength of the NFPG will be the sharing of teaching and research expertise and equipment/laboratories with forensic partners, which brings much added value to the group. Our membership have a broad range of expertise in psychological, policing and psychiatric matters relating to legal processes. These include psychological expertise in forensic interviewing, assessment/treatment of offenders, policing, eyewitness testimony and vulnerability in forensic contexts.

Key Collaborations

Key collaborators will include:

The International Investigative Interviewing Research Group (which the lead applicant is Chair), the Norwegian Police University College, Northumbria Police, local forensic units (eg HM Prisons and NHS Trusts), local courts and victim support.

Developing researchers

We will host a regular seminar series for under- and post-graduate students interested in the field, plus post-doctoral researchers working in the field. By doing so, we will provide students with invaluable experience in presenting their research to a mixed audience of academics, practitioners and under/post-graduate students.

Impact and Engagement

We will offer:

  1. A bi-annual conference for a wider academic, practitioner and general public audience;
  2. Regular workshops for members of the group on relevant topics;
  3. Regular meetings for all members.
