To provide an understanding of solids separation and handling and the design of basic plant equipment e.g. dryers, crystallisers, filters, centrifuges, fluidised beds.
To provide an understanding of design methods for specific plant items.
Outline Of Syllabus
Definition of drying. Terminology of humidification. Wet bulb and adiabatic saturation temperatures. Application of psychometric charts. Dryer designs and their applications.
Crystallization: Definitions & fundamental concepts. Nucleation processes and models. Crystal growth: models and kinetics. Yield and mass balances. Heat effects. Design and selection of crystallizers.
Particle size measurement and distribution, G/S and L/S separation techniques, fluidisation and fluidised bed design, pressure drop across a packed and fluidised bed, minimum fluidisation and entrainment velocity calculations.

The lectures will introduce concepts of solids handling and separation and specific design procedures.
Tutorials will provide practice in the above areas.
Assignment will enable students to apply the concepts learnt in the module on actual applications.
