Aims

1. To discuss key problems associated with air, water and land pollution and their impacts on environment and human health
2. To introduce Clean Technologies as possible solutions for the above problems
3. To discuss the features of Clean Technologies (e.g. Sustainability)
4. To introduce Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the key assessment tool for evaluating the cleanness of technologies
5. To demonstrate and discuss some key examples of Clean Technologies applications in chemical and materials engineering fields
6. To promote teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The learning activities related to the above syllabus outlines will be covered in lectures and small group teaching. Different teaching approaches including class exercises and discussions will be used to support student learning. The aims of lectures and small group teaching are to facilitate the achievements of the learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 5. The guided independent study will form an essential part of the student learning activities in order to achieve the learning outcomes 4 and 5.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The purpose of the examination is to assess the achievement of learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3. The research paper is assessing the achievement of learning outcomes 4 and 5. The objective of the peer assessment is to assess the contribution of each group member to the group work.
