The module aims to assist students in the transition to Higher Education by developing their academic skills in order to improve and enhance their personal effectiveness as learners. The module also aims to improve and enhance students’ employability skills using the ePortfolio system on Blackboard as a vehicle for assessment.

Relevant theory will be introduced during the lectures and a range of skills will be practiced and developed through individual and group activities. Further depth of skill development will be achieved through small group teaching activities i.e. skills practice seminars and IT workshops involving individual and group work/team challenges and tasks.
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Semester 1 - Students will develop a practice essay or commentary on their learning journey using feedback from the diagnostics, audits, IT tasks and ‘rate your-self’ activities in each session. This essay will be underpinned by references from their individual e-portfolio reflective blogs which will support the essay. The essay will be of 1,500 words (40%) and a 500 word reflective statement on team working tasks using theory to show development and future team working skills required (10%). This should be uploaded to the ePortfolio.
Semester 2 – Students will upload employability information to their ePortfolio and then import relevant information to a CV to apply for a marketing vacancy. They will also produce a covering letter and a maximum of eight PowerPoint slides to apply for the vacancy (40%). A 500 word reflective statement (10%) will also be provided on how their employability skills have been developed in Semester 2. This should all be uploaded to the ePortfolio.
Formative assessment – Students will produce a practice essay/personal statement (500 words) on which they will receive formative feedback to inform their Semester 1 assignment. They will also receive formative feedback at a number of stages to help students’ reflect and learning and skills developed which will help inform both the Semester 1 and 2 assignments.
Resit Assessment will consist of a 3,000 word essay plus a 1,000 word reflective statement on the development of academic and employability skills.
The assessment activity will encourage students to identify and effectively use feedback from a variety of sources. They will also be encouraged to collect information to support their employability and to reflect on the academic and employability skills developed through the module. The assessment activity is deemed to be the most appropriate to encourage students to identify and articulate the skills they have developed in relation to Newcastle University’s Graduate Skills Framework. This will enable them to become more personally effective as learner and, further, throughout their careers. The assessment activity is, therefore, directly and explicitly related to the intended learning outcomes of the module.
