Aims

A1. To introduce the students to three dimensional solid modelling practices and techniques with the aid of CAD/CAM software;
A2. To develop skills in a high-level programming language including data analysis and algorithm development.

Outline Of Syllabus

An introduction to Engineering Design Conventions based on BS 8888; Detail and assembly drawings, 1st and 3rd angle projections, isometric drawing, dimensioning, sections, auxiliary view, developments; An introduction to the Matlab programming environment, variables, flow control and loops, reading and writing data from/to other file formats; Matlab programming for vectors and matrices, functions, graphics and data handling.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The module is based on developing skills in the use of two software packages and therefore has a significant element of practical work. Inventor will be taught through directed practical classes (2, 2hr sessions per week). This will introduce the theory (IKO1/2) and allow students to develop their skills (ISO1). The material will use lectures to introduce and demonstrate concepts (IKO3/4) and students will then have the opportunity to their skills (ISO2/3) in the practical sessions.
