MEC2001 : Materials Science II

Semesters
Semester 1 Credit Value: 10
ECTS Credits: 5.0

Aims

To extend MEC1002 Materials Science I in the areas of composition and microstructure in dictating the mechanical properties of materials, control of properties by processing, design taking into account fatigue, fracture, creep and corrosion.

Outline Of Syllabus

- Overview of materials, with yield and failure mechanisms.
- Principles of Linear Elastic Fracture mechanics.
- Fatigue: mechanisms, S-N curves, design for improving fatigue performance.
- Creep of engineering materials.
- Corrosion and its avoidance. Statistical basis of design.
- Use of the above in design of metallic, polymeric and composite structures.
- Phase transformations and processing-microstructure-property relations.
- Introduction to computational materials engineering.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

- Lectures convey the underlying engineering science and the approaches required to apply this to the discipline-specific problems identified.
- Tutorials support the students' self-study in reading around the lecture material and learning to solve the practical engineering problems posed by the Tutorial Questions.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

- The examination provides an appropriate way to assess both theoretical understanding and practical problem solving skills under time-constraint as required in industry.
- The coursework enables more realistic engineering problems to be set and may also assess data acquisition and software use skills. The students will be aware of the definitions, SI units and dimensions of physical quantities and be able to apply the broad base of scientific principles which underpin the characteristics and uses of engineering materials.

Study abroad students considering this module should contact the School to discuss its availability and assessment.
