Aims
To familiarise students with the work and responsibilities of the marine surveyor, and in particular the procedures employed in structural and machinery surveys of ships and offshore installations.
Outline Of Syllabus
The module will be divided into four themes as follows:
The tasks and responsibilities of the marine surveyor: the categories of marine survey; the work of marine surveyor; the responsibilities of the marine surveyor.
Structural surveys, of ship hulls and offshore installations: the modes of degradation of ship hulls and offshore installations; the techniques employed in structural surveys; difficulties encountered.
Machinery and system surveys: the modes of degradation of main machinery and other systems; the techniques employed in machinery and system surveys; difficulties encountered.
Report preparation and writing: techniques employed in the preparation of technical reports; the standard practices and conventions used in the presentation of a survey report.
The module will include preschool reading, examples, an intensive school (five days), and a post school assignment.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following:
IKO1 - The categories of marine survey and the work of marine surveyors,
IKO2 - The responsibilities incumbent upon the practitioners.
IKO3 - Be able to select the appropriate procedures and to assist in undertaking the necessary tasks to carry out a structural survey of a ship or offshore installation,
IKO4 - A condition survey of the main machinery and other systems.
IKO5 - Be able to prepare a survey report in keeping with standard practice and conventions.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Students are encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject by independent reading for which they are given guidance in the distance learning material (IKO1-5). The preschool study is reinforced via lectures during the intensive school itself. The use of design during the intensive school, a work-based assessment and application after the intensive school also enable the students to learn. Subject specific skills (e.g. IT and project planning) are developed via the distance learning material, which is delivered by a web-based system (blackboard). Cognitive skills (problem solving/ decision making) are taught primarily through case studies and design classes, and developed through a work based assignment. Key transferable skills (communication, time management, ability to work alone etc) are developed through a work based post school assignment and via completion of the module itself, including the distance learning material (ISO1-11).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Knowledge and understanding are assessed via the unseen written examination and the written assignment. Subject-specific and cognitive skills are assessed via the module assignment, as are communication skills.
