Aims

To promote an understanding of the current theories of the relationship between diet and performance in sport and exercise.
Nutrition has become a popular subject in the sports and exercise arena especially in relation to the enhancement of performance. This has resulted in the development of a large industry selling 'sports' supplements and aids to performance, sometimes transgressing into unlicensed and illegal activities. This module will consider current dietary advice and products related to sports and exercise performance. Detailed consideration will be given to understanding the importance of macro and micronutrients in aiding sporting performance and the role nutrients play in aiding sports related injuries and recovery from exercise. For example, topics covered will include carbohydrate manipulation, drinks supplementation and fluid balance as well as energy intake.

The syllabus will cover the following topics involving lectures

Fuel sources of exercise
Energising for health and well being
Energy requirements for sport
Carbohydrates and sport
Dietary fats and sport
Protein and exercise, including body building
Fluid and electrolyte balance
Micronutrients and performance
The role of antioxidants in sport
Nutritional ergogenic aids
Nutrition and immune function in athletes

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The module will use lectures to deliver key information relevant to the subject and to provide information upon which the students can extend their learning by private study. The assessed report will allow the students to practise this form of extended writing in preparation for this style of presentation necessary for this, and other modules in Stage 3. The assessed report will also give experience in the assimilation and critical review of scientific literature.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The formal unseen examination will examine the students' understanding of the complex relationships between nutrition and exercise and sport. The unseen questions require abilities to evaluate and integrate information obtained from the lectures and additional reading and to prepare carefully considered essays; shorter answer questions will require the students to demonstrate a wider knowledge base than would otherwise be possible from single topic essays.

The report develops the ability of students to perform effective information retrieval, in the assimilation of relevant information and to be able to assess recent papers critically. They will have developed skills in independent thinking specific to the preparation of the report. Through the preparation of the report they will have enhanced and practiced the use of IT (Word) techniques. They will have developed written skills in the preparation of an extended report and used this skill in the formal examination.
