Speciality Area: Orthopaedics

Current Work

Why Newcastle?
The design of the AFP in Newcastle, with 8 months devoted to the academic specialty, was a significant factor in my choice to work here. In addition, this post has allowed me to pursue my interest in academic orthopaedics via the work done by the team exploring the fascinating potential of nanotechnology applications in this field.

Finally, I have previously lived in Newcastle and really liked the area. This made the decision to move here from Cambridge even easier.

Ongoing Work
In terms of ongoing work, I am working under the supervision of Prof Andrew McCaskie and Dr Mark Birch. I am involved in investigating the interaction of osteoblasts with various surfaces that have been fashioned on the nanoscale. As a basic example, this work might allow us to determine how to optimise the osteogenic role of osteoblasts on prosthesis surfaces after arthroplasty.

I am also working on an audit on hip arthroscopies, a surgical technique which has fairly recently been introduced as a health service in Newcastle.
