New Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy writes for both children and adults. She has won numerous awards, including the Signal Prize for Children's Verse for The Oldest Girl in the World (2000), the Whitbread and Forward Prizes, and the Lannan and E. M. Forster Prize in America. In 2005, she won the T. S. Eliot Prize for Rapture (2005).
The sound of my breath dips in
and out. So I begin
night writing. The stars type themselves
far out in space.
Who would guess,
to look at my sleeping face,
the rhymes and tall tales I invent?
