Caryl Philips was born in St Kitts and grew up in Leeds. In addition to writing plays, screenplays and works of non-fiction, he is author of nine novels including Cambridge (1991) and is Professor of English at Yale University. A regular contributor to The Guardian and The New Republic, his latest book, In the Falling Snow, was published in 2009.
She looked into his eyes and saw his pity for the daughter who was being offered a fifty-year-old widower with three children as a mode of transportation through life. She spoke no words.
