Bloodaxe Poetry Lectures: Reading

This year’s Bloodaxe poetry lectures  will explore the depiction of England in the work of contemporary poets including Carol Ann Duffy, Daljit Nagra, Jo Shapcott, Geoffrey Hill, George Szirtes and Paul Farley among others. It will compare their versions with those of predecessors including Auden, Larkin and Hughes, and discuss the importance of myth-making in present-day poetry in England.

Sean O’Brien’s most recent book of poems is November (2011), Poetry Book Society Choice and shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. Its predecessor, The Drowned Book (2007), won the T.S. Eliot and Forward Prizes. He writes widely about poetry and his book of essays, The Deregulated Muse, was published in 1998. Other work includes a novel, Afterlife (2009), short stories, plays and translations, including Dante’s Inferno (2006). He is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University.

The lectures will take place on Monday 5th December, Tuesday 6th December and Wednesday 7th December.
